Garden Fencing Options for London Properties

Fencing does more than mark a boundary. The right fence provides privacy, security and a clean backdrop that makes your entire garden look better. Here is a guide to the most popular fencing options for London properties.

1. Close-Board Fencing

The most common choice for London gardens. Vertical featherboard panels fixed to horizontal rails with concrete posts and gravel boards. Robust, affordable and provides complete privacy. Can be stained or left natural.

Best for: Budget-conscious projects, rear garden boundaries, maximum privacy.

2. Cedar Close-Board

A premium upgrade on standard close-board. Western red cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, ages to a beautiful silver-grey and has a warm, rich colour when new. Significantly more attractive than standard softwood.

Best for: Premium gardens, visible boundaries, clients who value aesthetics.

3. Slatted Screens

Horizontal or vertical slats with gaps between them. Modern, architectural and allows light and air through while still providing screening. Available in cedar, iroko and composite materials.

Best for: Contemporary gardens, side boundaries, areas where you want screening without blocking light.

4. Trellis Panels

Decorative lattice panels that work beautifully with climbing plants. Often used as a topper on close-board fencing to add height without feeling oppressive.

Best for: Adding height, supporting climbers, dividing garden zones.

5. Composite Fencing

Made from recycled wood and plastic, composite fencing requires zero maintenance, does not rot and maintains its colour for decades. Higher upfront cost but zero lifetime maintenance.

Best for: Low-maintenance gardens, modern properties, clients who never want to treat a fence again.

Foundations Matter

Regardless of the panel type, the foundation is what determines how long your fence lasts. We use concrete posts and gravel boards as standard — they prevent rot at ground level and provide a solid, level base. Timber posts in London clay soil will rot within 5–8 years; concrete posts last decades.
