Creating an Outdoor Entertaining Space in a London Garden

Premium outdoor entertaining space in a South East London garden — porcelain patio, seating wall and garden lighting by Wicked Gardens LTD

An outdoor entertaining space is one of the highest-value additions you can make to a London home. Done well, it extends your living area, creates a natural gathering point and makes your garden genuinely usable from spring through autumn — and even into winter with the right lighting and shelter.

1. Define the Zone

The best entertaining spaces feel like outdoor rooms — defined, contained and purposeful. A level patio or raised deck near the house creates a natural transition from indoors to outdoors. The surface should be large enough for a dining table and chairs with room to move around.

2. Choose the Right Surface

For dining and entertaining, you need a flat, stable surface. Large-format porcelain paving is our most popular choice — it is level, low-maintenance and looks consistently sharp. Composite decking is excellent for raised areas and creates a warm, inviting feel underfoot.

3. Add Built-In Seating

Built-in seating walls serve double duty — they define the space and provide extra seating for larger gatherings without cluttering the garden with furniture. A rendered wall with a hardwood cap is a premium detail that looks elegant and is comfortable to sit on.

4. Lighting Is Non-Negotiable

Without lighting, your entertaining space is unusable after 8pm for most of the year. Warm LED lighting creates atmosphere — recessed step lights for safety, uplighters on feature plants for drama and ambient wash lighting on the seating area for comfort. Smart controls let you adjust the mood from your phone.

5. Planting for Privacy and Atmosphere

Planting around the entertaining area provides privacy, softens hard surfaces and adds seasonal interest. Evergreen screening (Pittosporum, Star Jasmine) creates a green backdrop year-round. Fragrant plants like Sarcococca and Lavender add a sensory dimension that makes the space feel special.

6. Consider Shelter

A pergola or overhead structure extends the usable season. It provides shade in summer, shelter from light rain and a framework for climbing plants and festoon lighting. In London, where weather is unpredictable, some form of shelter makes a significant difference to how often you actually use the space.
