Porcelain vs Natural Stone Paving: Which Is Best for London Gardens?

April 2026 · 6 min read

Porcelain paving installation in a South East London garden — large format slabs with precision jointing by Wicked Gardens LTD

It is one of the most common questions we get asked: porcelain or natural stone? Both are excellent choices for London gardens — but they suit different situations. Here is an honest comparison based on hundreds of installations across South East London.

Porcelain Paving

Porcelain is a manufactured material fired at extremely high temperatures. It is dense, non-porous and incredibly consistent in colour and texture.

Durability: Frost-proof, stain-resistant and virtually maintenance-free. Handles London weather exceptionally well.

Maintenance: Minimal. An annual pressure wash keeps it looking new. Does not need sealing.

Appearance: Clean, modern and consistent. Available in a wide range of colours and textures, including stone and wood effects.

Cost: Mid-range. Material cost is moderate, but installation requires specialist adhesive and priming.

Best for: Modern gardens, low-maintenance spaces, north-facing gardens prone to algae.

Natural Stone Paving

Natural stone — sandstone, limestone, granite — is quarried and cut. Each piece is unique in colour, texture and veining.

Durability: Very durable but porous. Some stones are more frost-resistant than others. Limestone can stain; sandstone can weather unevenly.

Maintenance: Needs periodic sealing and more regular cleaning. Algae and moss grow more readily on natural stone.

Appearance: Unique, characterful and warm. Ages beautifully over time. Each slab is different.

Cost: Varies widely. Indian sandstone is affordable; premium limestone and granite are significantly more expensive.

Best for: Period properties, traditional gardens, clients who value natural character over consistency.

Our Recommendation

For most London gardens, we recommend porcelain. It handles the weather better, requires less maintenance and looks consistently sharp year after year. However, natural stone is the right choice for period properties where character and warmth matter more than low maintenance.

We source our porcelain and natural stone from London Stone — a trusted supplier with an excellent range of colours and finishes. We are happy to show you samples during the site visit.
